New post on how to make a simple leather plant pot

    12 November 2020 0 Share

Second to leatherwork, my other love is houseplants. I’m no expert, I have just always loved having plants and flowers around me. I started out with those that are traditionally easy to look after like aloe vera, cactus, and spider plants, and found that these were also super easy to propagate. Within a short space of time we were overrun with plants!

After giving lots to family and friends, the rest of them needed pretty new plant pots so I looked for a way I could make some out of leather. Here’s a quick and easy method you can use with leather, or any sturdy material really such as oil cloth or canvas.

    You will need:

    • Your scrap leather or chosen fabric
    • Ruler
    • Rotary cutter or fabric scissors
    • Hole punch
    • Rivets and Rivet Setting Tool
    • Some leather cord or string

First, measure your plant pot height and add 3/8th inch – the length will depend on how many times you want it to wrap around the pot. Cut your fabric to this size with your rotary cutter or scissors.

Secondly make a hole somewhere along the top edge of the fabric and set a rivet with your tool.

Finally, thread your cord through the rivet hole, wrap around your pot twice, tie and trim the ends.

Voila – you have a pot cover!

They look great with a mix of other types of pot – I also like to paint my ceramic pots with simple geometric designs.

My absolute favourite at the moment is my string of pearls plant – I have killed many of these in the past but think I’ve now found the perfect spot for it on my kitchen windowsill. I’d eventually like to make a hanging plant pot so that I can display it in all its’ glory – so keep your eyes out for another blog post once that’s done!
