3-Day Pants or Jeans Fitting Workshop – Lansing Michigan – July 17-19, 2026
Description Join Me for an Immersive 3-Day Pants & Jean Fitting Workshop Seams Fabrics & Mercantile 204 E. Cesar E. Chavez St. Lansing, MI 48906 (517) 999-1000 Here’s what past students have to say about this workshop: “I just came back from the 3 Day Pants or Jeans Fitting Workshop in Nashville and Jennifer is top-notch – a cut above the rest! She truly enjoys solving the mysteries in fit and takes it as a personal & exciting challenge to resolve. She is positive throughout the workshop and stressed to each of us to relax, enjoy the process, and have fun! I am new to sewing, but have drafted up many pants muslins unsuccessfully. I am someone who gets frustrated when things don’t go as I’d like it to and a perfectionist. But with her cheery optimism, Jennifer would check in, help you figure it out, and if you still didn’t get it, she approached it from a different way. Now I have a great fitting muslin and am ready to sew my first pair pants. Along with this course, we have a follow-up Zoom Meeting to ask more questions and can even reach out for additional help. That’s pretty awesome if you ask me! My recommendation for any new sewists who takes this class is to do some homework on pants construction and sew up a sample before going. But even then, Jennifer is ready and willing to help! I highly recommend her class!” ~ Alisha To see more reviews, click on the “Reviews” tab next to the Description tab above. Three Days of Pants Fitting Fun Spend three full days learning the art of fitting and constructing pants. During the first workshop in March we all enjoyed a relaxed pace… 3-Days turns out to be the perfect amount of time to spend fitting pants. I was so pleased to see that no one got frazzled or panicked about finishing the fitting process. The workshop starts with an overview of the Whole Scoop Pants Fitting Process. See how to pick out the best starting size and customize the pattern to agree with your unique shape. Did you know that some of the “fitting” is hidden in the center front/center back seams? I’ll share how to take advantage of these edges to create pattern pieces that agree with your curves and allow the fabric to hang properly. Learn how to prepare your customized pattern pieces to cut and sew a fit muslin. Using a single leg muslin and separate fitting waistband, we will start fitting in the afternoon. The steps to fit the single leg muslin are inspired by the basic framework of Top Down Center Out as described by R. Collins in Threads Magazine issue #218. (A copy of this article is included in the class kit.) Learn How to Adjust the Length of the Crotch from Both Ends One of the most useful things about working with a single leg muslin is that you can add extra fit allowances to the inseams. This is not possible with a two leg muslin because the extra fit allowances will be bunched up, making it hard to see how the crotch is fitting. In the single leg muslin, the inseam can be let out to extend the crotch points if needed (instead of making all the adjustments at the waistline). Before cutting out the second leg, the inseam allowance is trimmed back to 1/2″. One of the things that may need to be adjusted is the final position of the crotch curve. The crotch may not be able to be pulled up into a comfortable position from the waistline. This depends on how closely the shape of the crotch curve agrees with your figure and how close fitting the pattern is designed to be. If the shape of the pattern is significantly different from your body shape, I’ll show you how to get it in the right spot. Learn how to adjust the position of the base of the crotch without affecting the other vertical dimensions of the pattern. You can also play with the ease along the leg, by adjusting both the side and inseams. You will have time to practice solo pants fitting in front of a two mirror set-up, so when you go home, you will feel empowered to fit pants by yourself. Discover How to Accurately Transfer Adjustments from the Fit Muslin to Your Paper Pattern One of the pitfalls in fitting is making mistakes when you’re transferring adjustments from your fit muslin to your paper pattern pieces. I’ll show you how to transfer the adjustments as you work along instead of waiting until the end of the process. This makes it so much easier to end up with an accurately adjusted pattern in the end. This Workshop Includes Your Choice of Patterns and Fabric to Make Your Fit Muslin Patterns and fabric to make your first muslin are included with registration. During this class you have the choice of working with the Sorcha Classic Slim Trousers pattern or the Stretch Jeans Made Easy pattern. You will leave class with the tools and confidence to fit and sew any style pants or jeans. If you would like to start your first pair of pants on Sunday, please check for yardage and notions for your size pants, size/yardage charts can be found in the photo gallery. During the workshop in March, several students had time to start their first pair of pants on Sunday.
